Bula! (What is kava kava?)

"Bula is the most common word you'll hear used across Fiji and it is used to greet people or say hello. When you say bula to someone, you are actually wishing them life."

The Lightbox Cafe is a partnership between Gaby Vazquez and Jen Hombach of Jaya Kava. Starting in late Spring 2021, we'll be serving up cold-pressed juices made-to-order, superfood smoothies, tasty vegan treats, and fresh kava kava teas. Kava Kava is brewed from the roots of the Piper methysticum plant, of which there exist more than 100 varieties from islands across the Pacific Ocean. It induces soothing sensations to the nervous system, supporting restorative sleep, muscular relief, and boosted moods.

Traditionally, kava kava is served straight up: hand-squeezed with 100% filtered water. It's earthy and bitter and often is chugged! It comes with sweet pineapple slices to chase. Jaya Kava offers a variety of kava cocktails, infused with dates, housemate vegan milks, and organic spices & chocolate, if the earthy bitter tones of pure kava are not your vibe. Ginger beer and other fresh juices are great toppers, too!

Often noted as an alternative to beer, kava will bring relaxation and stress relief without a hangover. You'll sleep more soundly and wake up refreshed. Know that as opposed to alcohol, kava has a reverse tolerance, so it will probably take a few sessions to get the most impact from your kava drinking experience! Good things take time :)

We can't wait to share a shell with you!
